RBC was set up to coincide with the opening of the new Ravenscraig Sports Facility. North Lanarkshire Badminton Development Officer (David Johnston) was a key driver in attracting groups of small clubs and individual social players at other NL venues to come together and form a new larger club. Whilst some of the small clubs wanted to keep their own names and venues there was enough interest to get around 20 players to form the new club. Its initial aims were simply to have an adult social club playing once a week.
Our club was originally, and still is, an informal group of people who just want to play a friendly game of badminton. We don’t have a structured committee and players can simply suggest things on a club night and get others opinions.
Our key focus is to deliver an opportunity for social badminton players in North Lanarkshire at an affordable cost. We continue to play at Ravenscraig and need about 21 players per night to break-even (£3 each). This is achieved on a self-funded basis despite significant venue cost increases. We pay about £125 p.w. for courts
We don’t plan to participate in any league structures nor are we considering a Junior club level. These areas are already covered, in Lanarkshire, by other adult clubs and School badminton programmes.
We would like to have a resident club coach and are considering putting players through national qualifications.
Where we are just now...
Having affiliated to BADMINTONscotland in 2011 we have used that relationship in a number of beneficial ways including bespoke coaching for developing players, discount entry into Bonanza events and completion of Child & Vulnerable Adult requirements. Having our club details on their website has attracted many new members and we now play on both Monday and Thursday evenings with around 25 players per night on 4 courts.
We are active members of North Lanarkshire Badminton Development Group which promotes positive relationships between local clubs and organises friendly badminton matches.
We have also attended, as spectators, both the Scottish National Championships and International Championships using ticket offers from BADMINTONscotland. We look forward to watching Scottish players in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
We are currently looking at establishing a stronger “club identity” by introducing a Club Shirt for players. This is being progressed with Gannon Sports/Yonex and we hope to have shirts purchased very soon. We have recently set up a Facebook page to organise social events and will also be considering a club website.
Our players plan to participate in more BADMINTONscotland Bonanza events and we would like to contribute towards more Sports Centre events for the 'social player'.
We continue to welcome new players to join us at Ravenscraig.
