ANDREW Tremble, a member of the Magnum Badminton Club in Irvine for 30 years, witnessed a decline in membership within the club as playing numbers dropped, timed parallel with the folding of the Ayrshire Badminton League due to a lack of competing teams. To counteract this downfall of badminton activity within their own area, the idea of a junior badminton club to get kids interested in the sport and work in partnership with Magnum was conceived to help provide a pathway for players to join the senior set-up when they reached a certain level. As a result, the Irvine Junior Badminton Club was created.

Since the first junior club night was held on Friday 4th November in 2011 with only 8 players, the club has grown over time and now consistently accommodates up to 35 badminton players in the section. With the help of North Ayrshire Active Schools Manager Bobby McGhee, Coach Andrew Tremble was introduced to local cluster Coordinators who arranged the delivery of taster badminton sessions that would encourage pupils to take interest in the world’s fastest racket sport. While Irvine J.B.C display desire to link with the local community, they also work in partnership with the National Governing Body by implementing BADMINTONscotland’s Curriculum for Excellence School Pack in their taster sessions, introducing the sport to children and providing first-hand contact about the junior section. The Irvine J.B.C committee were also generously supported by North Ayrshire Council and their Youth Action funding programme, being awarded £2000 to provide a platform for their growth into the current feature they are today, gathering further sponsoring from local businesses along the way.

Not only have the club shown an interest in developing local badminton players through dedicated coaching, the junior section recently ran their first club championship on Friday 21st December 2012 with players competing in both Primary and Secondary school categories. In the singles events Erin Sinclair took home the Primary title, while Andrew Tremble Jnr beat Morton Sinclair to claim the Secondary crown. Within the doubles categories Steven Paterson and Ryan Young won the Primary section, as Ross MacKay and Andrew Tremble Jnr won the Secondary equivalent. Additional competition has also been sought after in mainstream Scottish domestic competitions, with Andrew Tremble Jnr excelling in an SSBU ranking tournament where he produced a string of winning performances in his first national competition. The focus on competition continues into 2013 as the club hope to encourage more of its members to participate regularly within the Scottish junior circuit.

The club committee at Irvine J.B.C is constructed of Andrew Tremble, James Mill, Scott Markwick, Martha and Will Thompson, who additionally perform coaching duties during training nights, and also Club Secretary Jim Taylor. All contributing members help to drive the players forward and are at the forefront of many recent successes. Over the next few years under the tutelage of the committee, Irvine J.B.C hopes to develop their coaching strategy to cater for the continuing demand for badminton and also get more players involved in competitions around the nation. With their ascendency to the top of the field in their respective Local Authority, thanks must go to all individuals devoted to the club cause for the examples of good practice they deliver at grassroots club sport.
