Grimley bounces back as Scotland keep up doubles challenge at the Europeans

Glasgow's Matthew Grimley suffered singles disappointment at the European Junior Championships 2017 in Mulhouse today.

But the young Scotland prospect quickly bounced back when he and twin brother Christopher booked their place in the last 16 of the boys' doubles while Motherwell's Alex Dunn and Beith's Eleanor O'Donnell are still going strong in two events as they look to follow up their latest mixed doubles win with level doubles partners Ciar Pringle (Giffnock) and Ciara Torrance (Prestwick) tonight.

In the morning session on day three of the individual event Grimley went out of the singles in the last 32 when he lost a close duel with Russia’s Nikita Lemeshko.

He went down 14-21 23-21 21-17 after saving six game points from 20-14 down in the second end to reach two points from victory at 20-20. He then saved a seventh game point before the Russian took the contest into a decider at the eighth attempt before going on to dominate the final game.

But a few hours later Matthew was back on court as he and Christopher, the fourth seeds, defeated Italy’s Fabio Caponio and Giovanni Toti 21-12 21-15 and now face Sebastiaan Li and Ties Ven Der Lecq of the Netherlands in the last 16.

The day began well for Scotland with Dunn and O’Donnell winning their mixed doubles 17-21 21-10 21-14 against fourth seeds Miha Ivancic and Petra Polanc of Slovenia. That earned them a place in the last 16 tomorrow against Ukraine’s Oleksandar Shmundyak and Yevgeniya Paksyutova.

Dunn and O’Donnell are both still in level doubles contention as well. Tonight O’Donnell and Ciara Torrance face Denmark’s Amalie Magelund and Freja Ravn while Dunn and Ciar Pringle meet Andreas Eskor and Robert Sokman of Estonia.

In the women’s singles Alexandria's Rachel Sugden saw her challenge come to an end but not before a gritty display against 14th seed Yvonne Li before the German prevailed 21-13 18-21 21-15.
