Scotland players head for Finland and France


THREE of Scotland’s senior players head for Vantaa this week to contest the Finnish Open while eight of the nation’s best juniors will be in the French city of Mulhouse for the 10-day European Under 19 Championships.

Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh, the 2015 and 2017 national men’s doubles champions, are second seeds and start against Finland’s Oskari Larkimo and Tuomas Nuorteva.

Matthew Carder, the 2016 Yonex Scottish National champion, will tackle the men’s singles in Finland, starting against Chinese Taipei’s Shih Kuei Chun.

Meanwhile, Motherwell's Alex Dunn, who recently reached the final of the Yonex Polish Open with Adam Hall, heads Scotland’s Under 19 challenge in Mulhouse.

Scotland start their Group 6 team challenge against 5/6 seeds Spain on Friday morning, followed by a match against the Netherlands in the evening. On Saturday they face Bulgaria in the morning and Portugal in the evening.

The Scotland squad, coached by Robert Blair, is: Alex Dunn, Christopher and Matthew Grimley, Ciar Pringle, Holly Newall, Eleanor O’Donnell, Rachel Sugden and Ciara Torrance.

In the individual events from April 11-16, Glasgow twins Christopher and Matthew Grimley are fourth seeds in the doubles while Mauchline's Holly Newall is 16th seed in the singles.

The Under 19 event is an important stepping stone for Beith's new National women's doubles champion Eleanor O'Donnell as next month she will be in the Scotland squad heading for the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2017 in Australia's Gold Coast as she looks forward to her senior international debut.
