Scots edged out in Dutch semis

Alex Dunn came agonisingly close to a second final in a week before losing in the men’s doubles semi-final at the 18th Victor Dutch International 2017 in Wateringen.

The 18-year-old, who was a silver medallist in mixed doubles at the European Junior Championships with Eleanor O’Donnell last weekend, reached the semi-final of the men’s doubles with Adam Hall after knocking out top seeds Matijs Dierickx and Freek Golinski on the way 21-13 21-23 21-14.

In the quarter-finals they defeated Denmark’s Mathias Bay Smidt and Victor Svendsen 21-13 12-21 21-17.

That earned a semi-final against another Dutch pair Jim Middelburg and Russell Muns but the young Scots went down 21-11 15-21 25-23.

Hall and Dunn came back from 20-16 down in the decider and saved seven match points before the Dutchmen snatched victory on their eighth.

In the women’s doubles O’Donnell was also seeking a second final appearance in a row.

She and Julie MacPherson, the second seeds, defeated Norway’s Solvar Flaten Jorgensen and Natalie Syvertsen 21-14 21-17 in the quarters but in the semi-final they also bowed out, beaten 21-16 26-24 by Cisita Joity Jansen and the experienced Birgit Overzier 21-16 26-24.

The Scots held four game points in the second before the Germans took the contest on their second match point.
