Scotland rounded off their team challenge at the European Junior Championships in Mulhouse with a 5-0 victory against Portugal.
But that and the 4-1 win over the Netherlands was not enough to take them into the knockout stages after defeats by Spain 3-2 and Bulgaria 4-1.
Scotland won four of the five contests against Portugal in straight games with only Rachel Sugden taken to three before winning 21-15 19-21 21-13 against Mariana Chang to give the Scots their winning 3-0 lead.
Christopher Grimley and Ciara Torrance defeated Marco Jorge and Mariana Leite 21-7 21-11 in the opening mixed doubles before Matthew Grimley defeated Carlos Andre Silva 21-13 21-8 in the singles.
After Sugden’s success, Christopher Grimley teamed up with Ciar Pringle to defeat Jorge and Silva 21-15 21-10 in the doubles and Eleanor O’Donnell and Ciara Torrance took the last contest 21-9 21-13 against Leite and Adriana Concalves.
Alex Dunn and Holly Newall sat out the final Group 6 match but the squad can now have a breather before starting the individual competition on Tuesday afternoon.
The top of the group will be decided this afternoon when 5/ 6 seeds Spain face Portugal and Bulgaria meet the Netherlands, who surprisingly beat Spain 4-1 last night to leave each of the top three with two wins and one defeat.
Coach Robert Blair said: “Unfortunately, we are going to finish the group outside the qualification places.
“We lost 4-1 to Bulgaria yesterday afternoon. Despite the scoreline, all the games were very tightly fought. Rachel Sugden performed very well and was close to bringing us a point, losing a very topsy-turvy match in three games.
“The women’s doubles also just failed to cross the finishing line, losing setting in the third. It was a good performance. However, at critical times the team were not quite as sharp and clinical as they had been the night before.
“The final match against Portugal was a comfortable win. Rachel again played well and was this time rewarded with a win. The others controlled their matches well.
“I hope the tough competition has prepared us well to perform to our best in the individual event, which starts on Tuesday.”
