Young Scots seeking individual success in Euros

Scotland’s young squad of eight players return to action in Mulhouse tomorrow looking to shrug off the disappointment of finishing third in Group 6 at the European Junior Championships.

Coach Robert Blair’s young players, who beat both group winners Netherlands and Portugal in the team event, will be keen to show their capabilities when the individual tournament gets under way in the afternoon session on day four of the championships.

Glasgow twins Christopher and Matthew Grimley are the fourth seeds in the men’s doubles and will go straight into the second round after a first-round bye. They will face the winner of a clash between players from Italy or Ukraine.

Team-mates Alex Dunn and Ciar Pringle face a first-round test on Wednesday evening against Russia’s Georgi Karpov and Mikhail Lavrikov.

Matthew Grimley also tackles the singles where he starts with a bye before facing Portugal’s 13th seed Miguel Rocha on Wednesday morning.

Pringle also has a bye before taking on Hungary’s Gergo Pytel or Portugal’s Carlos Andre Silva in the afternoon.

Rachel Sugden and Holly Newall tackle the women’s singles with Sugden facing Ukraine’s Valeriya Rudakova in the first round while Newall, the 16th seed, meets Slovenia’s Petra Polanc.

In the women’s doubles Newall and Sugden team up and after an opening bye could meet England’s Grace King and Hope Warner if they win their first-round contest against a Russian pair.

Eleanor O’Donnell and Ciara Torrance also start with a bye followed by a clash with a Swiss or Danish pair.

Christopher Grimley and Torrance and Dunn and O’Donnell are the first Scots into individual action when they tackle tomorrow afternoon’s mixed doubles.

Grimley and Torrance take on England’s Max Flynn and Lizzie Tolman while Dunn and O’Donnell meet Slovakia’s Adam Horak and Mia Tarvalova in the first round.
