BADMINTONscotland today confirmed one of the most exciting breakthroughs in the countdown to the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 when they agreed a partnership with BBC Sport to show live action from the Championships at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena from August 21-27.
BBC Sports involvement gives UK fans a great chance to keep up with the action during World Championships week.
Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said: “This is fabulous news, one of the most significant developments in our countdown to the Worlds. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have BBC on board as a major partner.
“BBC Sport will broadcast the World Championships on the various BBC platforms, with live streaming from two courts.
“We anticipate that this could be the first step in making badminton a mainstream sport available to everyone living in the UK.
“It is vital that we get more badminton screened on terrestrial television as part of our Legacy Programme. Our aim is to get more and more young people introduced to and playing the sport and this BBC deal represents a key first step.
“Our target under the Legacy Programme is to get 30,000 youngsters playing badminton which BBC Sport will support through their Get Inspired initiative.”
Councillor Archie Graham OBE, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “We are all so excited about this BBC partnership. Of course nothing will beat the atmosphere in the fabulous Emirates Arena, but watching live action from your own home is a close second!
“By making the Badminton World Championships more accessible to people living across the UK, we hope to introduce a new generation to badminton; letting them experience first-hand how interesting and exciting the sport can be.”
Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland Director of Events, said: “I am delighted the BBC has come on board to broadcast this year’s World Championships across its various platforms. This is a great result for badminton and testament to the hard work of BADMINTONscotland to make the World Championships the best ever.
“As we’ve shown in recent years, Scotland is the perfect stage for events and together with the national broadcaster, EventScotland is proud to be supporting the TOTAL BWF World Championships to showcase world-class badminton to the UK.”
Under the partnership there will be
* Live streaming of action on both courts on the BBC Sport website throughout the championship
* A one-hour highlights programme the day after the finals (screened August 28)
