Carder takes Universities title

Matthew Carder is the new British Universities men's singles champion.

The 2015 champion and 2014 runner-up won the title when he defeated Alex Lane in a close final in Sheffield.

Top seed Carder defeated Oliver Phillips 21-8 21-11 then knocked out 9/16 seed Garrylee McMullen 21-15 21-9 before overcoming another 9/16 seed Sahil Sipani 21-14 21-16 in the last eight.

In the semi-finals he outplayed 3/4 seed Harry Wang 21-13 21-14 to book his place in the final without dropping a game.

The 2016 Yonex Scottish National champion and 2017 runner-up finally dropped a game in his showdown with Lane, winning 21-17 7-21 21-18 to lift the title. Second seed Lane had also reached the final without dropping a game.

In the mixed doubles Alex Dunn and Sarah Findlay battled through three close contests before the 3/4 seeds fell in the semi-finals, beaten by second seeds Matt Clare and Viki Williams 21-13 21-19.

They in turn lost to top seeds Greg Mairs and Jenny Moore in a close final 17-21 30-29 21-14.
