KIRSTY GILMOUR is through to the quarter-finals of the women’s singles and Adam Hall and Alex Dunn will contest the last eight of the men’s doubles at the Yonex US Open in Anaheim tonight.
Gilmour defeated Haruko Suzuki 21-17 24-22 and now faces another Japanese rival in Saena Kawakami. It gives Gilmour a quick chance for revenge as Kawakami defeated her in Sunday’s Yonex Canada Open final in Calgary.
There is another big incentive for Gilmour to win as victory is likely to earn her a semi-final with old rival and Commonwealth champion Michelle Li of Canada.
Against Suzuki the Scottish star led 12-8 and 17-13 before taking the first game with a three-point surge. The second game looked like going Gilmour’s way after she opened a 12-7 lead and led 18-15 but Suzuki fought back and in a close climax Gilmour had to save three game points before taking the contest on her first match point after 50 minutes.
In the men’s doubles Hall and Dunn moved into the last eight with a convincing 21-13 21-14 victory over Mexico’s Job Castillo and Lino Munoz. But they will face a tougher test today against Japanese second seeds Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko, who beat the Scottish pair in Calgary last week.
Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh missed out on joining their team-mates in the last eight when they went down 22-20 21-15 against Vietnam’s Tuan Duc Do and Hong Nam Pham despite leading 13-6 in the second game before being hit by a decisive 10-point surge from their opponents.
In the men’s singles Scottish No. 1 Kieran Merrilees had to contest two rounds yesterday. He won his second round match 21-13 21-10 against Indonesian Dewantoro Pandu but then went down in the last 16 by the same scoreline against Koki Watanabe of Japan.
Eleanor O’Donnell and Julie MacPherson had lost in the first round of the women’s doubles but O’Donnell and Dunn reached the second round of the mixed doubles before falling to top seeds Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia 21-12 21-18.
