Adam Hall and Alex Dunn's challenge at the Spain International in Madrid came to an end at the semi-finals stage on Saturday.
They reached the last eight without hitting a shuttle after a first-round bye followed by a walkover against Bulgaria’s Peyo Boichinov and Ivan Panev.
Finally, at lunchtime on Saturday, the young Scotland pair got on court to face Hiroki Okamura and Masayuki Onodera, who beat Joshua and Sam Magee of Ireland and third seeds Matijs Dierickx and Freek Golinski of Belgium on the way to the quarters.
Hall and Dunn booked their place in the semi-finals when they defeated the Japanese pair 21-19 21-17.
But they bowed out in the semi-finals against Jacco Arends and Ruben Jille, the Dutch pair who are ranked nearly 100 places higher at No 65 in the world.
Hall and Dunn lost a close opening game 21-19 before the Dutchmen dictated the second to complete victory 21-12.
Kieran Merrilees failed to reach the last eight of the men's singles. After beating India’s Anand Pawar in his opening contest, the seventh seed last night lost to Germany’s Kai Schaefer 19-21 21-18 21-17 in the longest match of the tournament so far at 69 minutes.
