Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh brought the curtain down on team-mate Adam Hall’s partnership with England’s Peter Mills when the Yonex All England Open Championships got under way in Birmingham today.
The reigning Yonex Scottish National champions put in a dominant display to defeat Hall and Mills 21-17 21-14 in just 28 minutes.
Campbell and MacHugh dictated the opening game and opened an 11-4 lead. Their opponents, who were runners-up at the Scottish Open Grand Prix in November, then trailed 20-14 and although they saved three game points to close to 20-17 they couldn’t deny Campbell and MacHugh taking the opener.
Hall and Mills rallied briefly in the second game to lead 5-2 and 8-6 but they could not contain Campbell and MacHugh, who drew level at 8-8 and moved on to victory on their first match point.
Campbell and MacHugh need another win this evening to make the main draw and a clash with China’s Liu Xialong and Xu Chen tomorrow.
But to earn that place in the first round of the main draw they will have to overcome Belgium’s third qualifying seeds Matijs Dierickx and Freek Golinski or Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe, who reached the semi-finals of last week’s Yonex German Open in Mulheim.
