Badminton Scotland is delighted to announce that the TOTAL BWF World Championships has been shortlisted for the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards 2017.
For the first time in 20 years, badminton’s most prestigious event came to Glasgow and the Emirates Arena this summer, showcasing the world’s top talents across an entertaining week of sport.
Showing Glasgow’s sporting hospitality at its finest, the tournament created a great legacy in Scotland and beyond, now recognised with a place in the Sporting Event of the Year shortlist, sponsored by Event Scotland.
Now in the 11th year, the Scottish Sports Awards 2017 recognise incredible success stories throughout the year, celebrating the success of the country.
And with the Scottish Open Grand Prix now only a week away, the success is set to keep on coming for Scottish badminton as some of the world’s best prepare to return to the Emirates Arena from 22-26 November.
Badminton Scotland President Ian Campbell said: “The TOTAL BWF World Championships was widely recognised as one of the best ever.
“The fact that it has been shortlisted for this award is testament to the hard work of an awful lot of people. Badminton Scotland is justifiably proud of this achievement.”
Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of Badminton Scotland, added: “We are delighted to be recognised by being shortlisted for this prestigious award after a fantastic year for badminton in this country.
“Glasgow was so thrilled to host the TOTAL BWF World Championships and the way everyone delivered – from the players to our wonderful volunteers – is a real credit to the city and the sport.
“A lot of work went in to these Championships, as well as next week’s Scottish Open Grand Prix, so to be recognised in this way is fantastic.”
Glasgow’s DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel will play host to the awards on December 7, with the TOTAL BWF World Championships joined on the Sporting Event of the Year shortlist by the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open Golf and European Rugby Champions Cup Final Weekend.
