The Premier Badminton League auction took place in Hyderabad, India on 9 October this year with 133 of the World’s best players available for the 8 teams in the league to choose from.
On a day of intense speculation and even more intense bidding Scotland’s own Kirsty Gilmour joined the Bengaluru Blasters at a cost of 33 lakh or 3,300,000 Indian rupees. Her teammates at the Bengaluru Blasters will include, World No.1 in Men’s Singles Viktor Axelsen, his Danish compatriot Mathias Boe (currently ranked World No.2 in Men’s Doubles), and the player she defeated in her first game at the TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships, India’s Rituparna Das.
The season will start on the 23rd of December 2017 and run for 24 days through to the 14th of January 2018 when a winning team will be crowned. Kirsty’s team, initially the Bengaluru Topguns before changing to the Blasters at the start of last season, have struggled in recent years to reach the knockout stage of the competition, but they will be hoping that with a strong team they can go further this time around. The Bengaluru fans are accustomed to cheering on Scottish shuttlers, with Robert Blair a member of the team during the 2016 season, although he only played in one game that season. They will be hoping that Kirsty will play in as many games as possible this season and potentially provide the spark that could see them progressing further than they have ever gone before.
