Lindsey Ireland’s Outstanding Performance at Highland U15/U19 Championships

On Saturday 4th November and Sunday 5th November 2017, Black Isle Leisure Centre in Fortrose hosted the Highland U15 & U19 Championships.

With 80 players travelled from all over Scotland to compete including: Inverness, Orkney, Shetland, Invergordon, Gairloch, Caithness, Lochcarron, Fort Augustus, Moray, Buckie, Aberdeen, Stonehaven, Dundee, Fife, Lanark, Edinburgh, Irvine, Kilmarnock, Glasgow, North Berwick and Linlithgow.

Both tournaments ran in pool system followed by final A and B rounds – with 5 events: boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.

Outstanding performance:  Lindsey Ireland (Aberdeen) competed in U15 & U19 age groups and performed well and above expectations on both days.  Lindsey made 3 finals in U15 age group,  securing the singles title.  She then came back on the Sunday to compete in the U19 age group.

Lindsey secured the U19 singles title quite convincingly against extremely strong opposition, and made semi-finals in the doubles securing a 3rd place medal.  What a talent – a very big well done.

U15 Summary:
There was a wide range of ability across the events with hard fought games throughout.  Ian Campbell (Inverness) managed to secure wins in singles and mixed events partnering Tommy Ballantine (Orkney) and Mary Kong (Edinburgh) – narrowly missing out of doubles win with a setting game loss to Angus Meldrum (Irvine) and Logan Ireland (Edinburgh).

In the girls events Lindsey Ireland (Aberdeen) won the singles title against Mary Kong.  Mary came back with Vibha Raman (Edinburgh) to secure the doubles win from Lindsey and Kari Durrand (Wick) – unseeded scratch pairing.  Also in the mixed Lindsey and Eion Cumming (Gairloch) – again unseeded -  took Ian and Mary to the edge with setting game to secure runner-up place.

There were two double winners of the day – Ian Campbell (Inverness) and Mary Kong (Edinburgh).

The consolation event saw some great performances from all players with the following securing wins: Imogen Meldrum (Irvine) singles plate, Jamie Fraser (Moray) singles plate, Neil Campbell/Rory Kiln (Aberdeen/Inverness) doubles plate, Isobel Howard/Elissa Hunter-Dorans (Moray/Inverness) doubles plate, and Lewis Gallagher/Nicole Miller (Wick) mixed plate.

U19 Summary:
For the first time in Highland U19 history the tournament pulled in 19 young ladies to compete with 15 young men – many thanks to Shetland and Orkney for travelling lengthy distances to make the difference in our ladies’ events.  Callum Flockhart (Fife) managed to secure two wins in singles and doubles partnering Kyle Middleton (Dundee).  They toppled Sam Muir/Cameron Strachan (Aberdeen) to take the doubles title.  Very high standard of play from both these ‘unseeded’ boys who managed to tumble down the seeds on their way to the finals in both events.

Lindsey Ireland (Aberdeen) secured very strong wins on her way to the final in singles to secure the title against Lauren Page (Edinburgh).   Lauren Page/Jordan Murray (Edinburgh) went into secure a win in doubles against Erin Sinclair/Rachel McLean (Ayrshire/Edinburgh).  In the mixed Sam Muir/Jodie Harris (Aberdeen) took the title against Lucy Russell/Amy Sineath (Shetland) (Unseeded pairing).

There was one double winner of the day: Callum Flockhart (Fife)

The consolation event saw some great performances from all players with the following securing wins: Mary Kong (Edinburgh) singles plate, Luca Russell (Shetland) singles plate, Luca Russell/Kingsley Ho (Shetland), Neve Hall/Chloe Hitchin (Orkney/Shetland), and James Clark/Chloe Hitchin (Inverness (Shetland) mixed plate.

Many thanks to all players/parents for taking part in the events.  Special thanks to Fortrose Leisure centre for hosting these events along with all the HBG volunteers, who time after time, give up their time freely to make these events possible.
