Fiona Christie enjoyed a day of mixed success at the Para Badminton World Championships as the women’s singles competition got underway.
Christie eased through her opening WH2 match against Italy’s Marcella Li Brizzi, needing just 19 minutes to secure a dominant 21-5 21-4 win.
But, facing seeded opponent Yuma Yamazaki of Japan in her second round-robin fixture, Christie couldn’t repeat the trick, defeated 21-10 21-4 though she still progressed into the knockout stages.
Mary Wilson will also compete in the elimination rounds of the SL4 women’s singles, having first received a walkover in her opening match against Vietnam’s Vu Hoai Than before being defeated by second seed Helle Sofie Sagoy of Norway, losing 21-8 21-10.
While Deidre Nagle won her SS6 singles thriller against Ruhi Satish Shingade of India, 21-17 19-21 24-22.
In the men’s SL3 singles, Alan Oliver was defeated in both his matches, while Colin Leslie won his second match to ensure progression to the knockout rounds.
Leslie was also in action in the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles, playing alongside Denmark’s Astrid Lilhav Riis, but they were eliminated by Australian/Kiwi duo Corrie Keith Robinson and Caitlin Dransfield.
There was success for Oliver in the SL3-4 men’s doubles, as he and Sweden’s Rickard Nilsson won their first round-robin match, defeating the seeded Marcel Adam and Simon Cruz Mondejar 21-12 21-17.
