Scottish Open Grand Prix to be broadcasted live

Badminton fans can look forward to watching the best of the action at this year’s Scottish Open Grand Prix on the BBC Sport website.

The broadcaster will show coverage of all five finals, and selected semi-finals, at the 2017 competition which takes place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow from November 22-26.

All semi-finals played on court 1 on Saturday November 25 will be shown in one continuous session from midday.

The following day's finals will be shown in two sessions, with two matches played from 11am and the remaining three finals starting at 2pm.

The Scottish Open, the third oldest championships in the sport, features some of the top international athletes year on year, including Scotland’s very own Kirsty Gilmour.

The announcement follows on from August’s successful TOTAL BWF World Championships, held at the same venue, which was streamed live on the BBC Sport website, with an additional hour-long television highlights show following the final.

Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said: “This is fantastic news for badminton fans.

“Badminton is an exciting and popular sport to watch and this was proven with the viewing figures for August’s TOTAL BWF World Championships shown by the BBC.

“We are delighted to see the BBC on board again, this time for the Scottish Open Grand Prix, which I have no doubt will showcase the very best of badminton once more.”

Councillor David McDonald, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to, once again, welcome BBC as a partner for another of our fantastic sporting events.

“Thousands of people tuned in across the UK to watch BBC’s online coverage of the TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships – only reinforcing what a loyal following the sport has in the country – and I am sure the Scottish Open Grand Prix will be just as successful in drawing online viewers.”

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “After their excellent coverage of the TOTAL BWF World Championships, I’m delighted the BBC are once again on-board to showcase world-class badminton to UK fans via the BBC Sport Website.

“This is a great result for the sport and is a wonderful endorsement for the hard work of BADMINTONscotland in not only delivering a fantastic World Championships but also in delivering a long-term legacy from the event.

“As we’ve shown many times, Scotland is the perfect stage for events and together with the national broadcaster, EventScotland is proud to be supporting the Scottish Open Grand Prix.”

The Scottish Open Grand Prix is being staged at the Emirates Arena by BADMINTONscotland with support from Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council and EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.
