Scotland’s Toni Woods enjoyed a fine opening day at the Yonex Welsh International as she progressed into the main draw of both the mixed doubles and women’s singles.
The 18-year-old first teamed up with Jack MacGregor to beat English pairing Luke Hill and Rosemary Allen 21-6 21-11 in just 18 minutes to set up a clash with Michael Roe and Jess Hopton in the first round proper.
Woods then came from a set down to win a thrilling clash against Allen in the women’s singles, triumphing 16-21 21-10 24-22, before following that up with a second qualification victory against England’s Kimberley Clague 21-6 21-7.
Her task is less straight forward in the next round, however, as she prepares to take on fifth seed Yaelle Hoyaux from France, while she and Sweden’s Emma Thorne missed out on a place in the women’s doubles main draw.
Elsewhere, Jordan Edgar opened his competition with a win over Hugo Jardim in straight games before being knocked out of the men’s singles by 16th seed Richard Kuhl, defeated 21-7 21-8.
MacGregor could not follow up his doubles triumph with victory in the singles, going down 21-12 21-10 to 12th seed Adrian Dziolko of Poland.
Sameer Aamir also missed out on the next round despite claiming the first game as he lost to Andrew Wainwright in three.
And there was to be more disappointment for the 19-year-old as he lost alongside his brother Shaun in the men’s doubles to Toby Leung and Ethan Rose 21-12 21-6.
