Last night (17 Oct) the first BADMINTONscotland Club Workshop of the season was held at Queen Anne High School, Dunfermline, Fife.
The workshop was delivered by Victoria Clark from Active Advantage and the theme for the evening was “Increasing Participation & Retaining Players”.
There were nine clubs represented by members spanning all age groups, including Wing, Dunfermline Carnegie, Glenearn, NEFBA Jaguars, Cupar Parish Church Social Club, Drumbrae, Kirkcaldy, DBA, Dunfermline TC.
During Victoria’s excellent presentation, where she encouraged lively debate and the sharing of information, the members traced the journey their clubs had made over the years.
They looked at actions they could take to engage with different groups of people, for example, young mums & retired people.
The pros & cons of social media were discussed and how to target social media to the age group they wanted to attract.
This highlighted some really interesting facts which the clubs plan to use to attract members.
Victoria shared information from surveys conducted by sportscotland which really surprised some of the club members who thought they knew why people had taken up the sport.
The club reps were then encouraged to think of ways to retain members and again good practice was shared with the group.
Everyone present felt they left with some real nuggets of useful information.
One of those in attendance said "This will totally change the way our club use social media, we will be able to target people so much more effectively" and another said "I thought I knew why children played badminton but this workshop has really opened my eyes" so it was clearly a worthwhile experience for those who attended.
It was a thought-provoking presentation which really opened the eyes of club members to new ways of increasing their club membership and making sure members wanted to stay with the club in future.
