The LI-NING Czech Open 2017 got underway yesterday at the City Sports Hall Vodova in Brno, Czech Republic. Scotland had representation on the first day of the tournament in all events, except for mixed doubles where action didn’t get underway until today.
In the qualifying draw for men’s singles, Christopher and Matthew Grimley each won through their first round of the draw, but both, unfortunately, lost out in the second round against seeded opponents.
It was a similar story for Holly Newall in women’s singles, who came through her first match comfortably in straight games before coming up against the considerable experience of Hungary’s Laura Sarosi. In a tense three-game thriller, Holly eventually went down 21-18 18-21 14-21.
It was a better day for the Scottish representation in the doubles events. After a busy day for both of them, Matthew and Christopher Grimley took on Poland’s Konrad Ploch and Adam Szolc in the men’s doubles. Despite already playing two games each, the Scottish duo recorded a comfortable 21-13 21-14 victory.
Holly Newall went again late in the day in women’s doubles alongside her partner Ciara Torrance. They took on the Czech Republic’s Veronika Kubeckova and Anna Skarkova but disappointed the home crowd by beating the Czech pair in straight games, 21-8 21-8.
