Mixed day for Scots at Bulgarian Junior

Scotland experienced a mixed day on the opening day of the Bulgarian Junior International yesterday.

In the men’s singles eleventh seed Matthew Grimley beat Swede Calle Fredhom 21-15 23-21 in the first round to set up a second round clash against Stephen Jong of England for a place in the last sixteen.

But there was disappointment for his brother Christopher as the second seed lost to Danish player Jonas Jaeger 21-18 21-16.

In the women’s singles Rachel Sugden had a good first round win over Bulgarian Mihaela Chepisheva 21-11 21-12 but faces a tough ask against Chepisheva's compatriot, top seed Maria Delcheva, in the second round.

Alice Campbell succumbed to a 21-13 21-13 defeat against another of the Bulgarian contingent, Hristomira Popovska.

The Grimleys are top seeds in men’s doubles and open their campaign against Austria’s Jannik Maczejka and Simon Ofner this afternoon while Campbell and Sugden have a first round tie with Martina Corsini and Chiara Passeri of Italy in the women’s doubles.
