Torrance bows out of KaBal International at Quarter-final Stage

It was not to be for Ciara Torrance as she and Jessica Hopton were beaten in the quarter-finals in the KaBal International in Karvina.

Torrance and English partner Hopton bowed out of their last-eight clash in the Czech Republic, losing in straight games to Danish pair Elisa Melgaard and Sofie Nielsen.

The teams were neck and neck at 12-12 in the first game, but their Scandinavian opponents found an extra gear to pull away and seal victory 21-13.

And the second game followed a similar pattern, with Torrance and Hopton still in touching distance at 16-14 behind, but eventually succumbed 21-15 as their opponents kicked on once more.

But Torrance was far from downbeat afterwards, focussing on the positives of her performances: "I feel like in the first half of both sets Jess and I played really well as we were controlling the rallies and using our attack well when we had the momentum of a run of points.

"The Danish, unfortunately for us, were very good after the break at 11 in each set as they kept pushing up the court and countered really well.

"But overall I'm very pleased with the performances Jess and I put in and progressing to a quarter final of an International Series in our second tournament together is very motivating!"

Torrance and Hopton had beaten Polish duo Kornelia Marczak and Aneta Wojtkowska and Czech shuttlers Berta Ausbergerova and Michaela Zelinkova to reach the last eight before Saturday’s reverse.

Torrance had also featured in the mixed doubles with Ciar Pringle earlier in the tournament, but the duo suffered defeat in qualification on Thursday by the home team of Vojtech Selong and Denisa Sikalova.
