Dan Travers and Christine Black eased through their opening 60+ mixed doubles match at the 2018 European Senior Championships.
The second seeds beat German pair Jurgen Becker and Christel Schindler 21-12 21-16 and now face a clash against Alan Edgley and Reggie Baker in their quest to reach the top step of the podium on Sunday.
Although yet to open their level doubles campaigns both are still going strongly in the singles events, but Sam Campbell lost out to Frenchman Thierry Brunel in his opening contest.
In the 40+ age group Mark MacKay won his opening singles match and now faces Frederic Nourry of France later this afternoon for a place in the last-16, but Vilas Nair lost a tough battle to Dane Carsten Jorgensen.
Gavin Blyth and Martin Sheach won their opening men’s doubles match at 45+ to set up a clash against Mikkel Drescher and Christian Marott Hansen of Denmark but there was disappointment for Sheach in the mixed doubles when he and Sweden’s Maria Jonsson lost out to Jonsson’s compatriots in their opening match.
At 55+ brother-sister duo Ross Gladwin and Jill Gladwin Greig scored two good wins to reach the last sixteen of the mixed doubles, but they will have to be on top of their game against Ireland’s eighth seeds Graham Henderson and Pamela Peard if they want to progress further.
Gladwin Greig and Danish partner Mona Ahlsten also face a stern test in the women’s doubles against Ahlsten’s compatriots Birte Bach Steenberg and Birthe Pernille Skjoet, the joint third seeds, after scoring a hard-fought 21-23 21-17 21-14 win to Finnish the challenge of Finland’s Sirpa Korkiakoski and Ritva Turkia.
Gladwin has yet to play his opening men’s doubles match but lost out to Russian Sergey Razuvaykin 19-21 21-5 21-16 in the last-sixteen of the singles.
Leslie Frame put in a creditable performance in the 75+ singles but it wasn’t enough to topple Finland’s Kai Lohman who progressed courtesy of a 21-8 21-19 victory and Frame’s participation in the tournament was brought to an end when he and Sweden’s Knut-Olof Akesson lost out to an English/Danish duo in the 70+ men’s doubles.
