Action gets underway in the YONEX Belgian Junior 2017

There were a number of young Scottish stars on court as action got underway on the first day of the YONEX Belgian Junior 2017. The three-day event is being held in Herstal, Belgium from today until Sunday.

Things got off to a difficult start for Scotland early on day one with Lloyd Holland & Sarah Sidebottom going down to Swedish opposition in XD. The men’s singles competitors also struggled early on with Brandon Tsang, Lloyd Holland, Jack Riddell and Matthew Grimley all eliminated before midday. Matthew, in particular, will have been disappointed after narrowly losing to Germany’s Brian Holtschke in a three-set thriller that ran for almost an hour and included a 23-21 victory for Matthew in the second game.

Things turned around for the Scot’s thereafter with Harry Mobey and Christopher Grimley delivering victories in MS in convincing fashion; Harry going past Dutchman Vincent Braaksma 21-15 21-15 and Christopher comfortably beating Belgian competitor Robby Bronselaer 21-9 21-10. Harry will challenge Czech contender Vojtech Sebera , while Christopher will play Spain’s Alvaro Leal later this evening.

Women’s singles also produced a mixture of results in the early games with Sarah Sidebottom suffering a two-game loss to Sabine De Wit 21-17 21-15, while fellow Scot Lauren Middleton secured a two game victory over Laura Solis 21-18 21-13.

There are still plenty of matches left to play today with Scottish players competing in all disciplines, but mixed doubles, before a late finish predicted around 10:30 pm (local time) tonight.
