BADMINTONscotland seals major partnerships with Yonex

BADMINTONscotland and Yonex, the world’s No. 1 badminton brand, both had plenty to celebrate today after announcing major partnerships with just five months to go before the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 comes to Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

Yonex UK has agreed to extend their long-standing title sponsorship of the Yonex Scottish National Championships. Yonex will remain title sponsors and equipment suppliers for the next three years in a partnership which dates back to 1999.

But the world’s No.1 badminton brand, who have been title sponsors of the Yonex All England for 34 consecutive years, also had another good reason to celebrate after being appointed the BWF’s Official Equipment Supplier for Major Events. It means they will be Equipment Supplier for Glasgow 2017, providing everything from courts to nets and shuttles for the Championships from August 21-27.

Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said: “We have enjoyed a tremendous relationship with Yonex for nearly 20 years and it’s a perfect fit to have them on board for Glasgow 2017. This is a key partnership in our preparations for the Worlds.

“It is also so reassuring to know that Yonex UK is to extend its support of our Scottish National Championships. The Nationals is a key pathway in the development of our emerging young players as they come through the ranks to international tournament level.”

BWF President Poul-Erik Hoyer, thanking the Japanese company for its longstanding commitment to badminton, said: “Yonex has been a pioneer in the development of badminton equipment and continues to blaze the trail in innovation and technology. Its standards and reputation as the leading badminton brand are globally respected – and perhaps even envied. It is a brand that inspires confidence in those who use it and in those with whom it partners.

“I cannot say that we are welcoming Yonex to the badminton family, as they have long been a vital part of it, but I can certainly say we are very pleased to bring them even closer to us through this important partnership.”

Councillor Archie Graham OBE, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “We’re all so proud to welcome Yonex to the Glasgow 2017 family. As the world’s No.1 badminton brand – it only makes sense to have them on board for the Badminton World Championships! It’s great to know that all our equipment will be supplied by the most trusted brand in the badminton world.”

Of the agreement between BADMINTONscotland and Yonex UK, Paul Jepson, Managing Director of Yonex UK, has been the driving force in the company’s support of BADMINTONscotland over the last two decades and he said: “This is an exciting day for Yonex both globally and in Scotland.

“Yonex has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with BADMINTONscotland and I am delighted that the company will now play its part in what I am sure will be a fabulous World Championships in Glasgow.

“Our title sponsorship of the Yonex Scottish National Championships dates back 18 years and I am pleased that we are able to continue the partnership and help the ongoing development of badminton in Scotland, not just at the top level of the game but also at junior and grass roots level. We want this to continue to be a strong and enduring partnership.”

The TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships 2017 will be staged at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena from 21-27 August.

It is being delivered by BADMINTONscotland in partnership with Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council and with funding support from EventScotland and UK Sport.
