FORMER international and National champions Gordon Thomson and Graeme Smith played a major part last night as Police Sport UK defeated Scotland Select 8-3 in Glasgow.
Thomson defeated Joshua Apiliga in the opening contest 21-10 21-7 and the Police team never looked back after that in the annual match at the Sir Craig Reedie BADMINTONscotland Centre.
Thomson and Smith teamed up in the men's doubles to guide the Police into a 4-1 lead and Smith then partnered Lisa McMullen to a 21-18 21-16 victory over Josh Mackay and Maria Leith in the final contest.
The star for the young Scotland Select was Rachel Sugden. She followed up her semi-final performance at the Yonex Scottish National Championships in Perth on Sunday by defeating Una Hunter 21-15 21-6 in her singles and then returned to the court with Alice Campbell to take their women's doubles 17-21 21-18 21-16 against McMullen and Hunter.
Scotland's other win came in the mixed doubles when Thomson for once slipped up as he and Bethan Higginson went down 21-19 19-21 21-18 against Adam Pringle and Rachel Andrew.
The match featured two contests each of men's and women's singles and doubles and three mixed doubles.
The Scotland Select squad, all teenagers, was: Joshua Apiliga, Alastair Campbell, Lloyd Holland, Josh McKay, Adam Pringle, Rachel Andrew, Rachel Cameron, Alice Campbell, Maria Leith, Rachel Sugden.
