Ian Brown awarded British Empire Medal

BADMINTONscotland today offered their congratulations to former President Ian E Brown after he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

The award was for Ian’s services to badminton.

Ian has, for many years, been a key figure in the organisation of BADMINTONscotland’s major events and for many years has organised the Yonex Scottish National Championships at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth.

He is the second Scotland badminton figure to be honoured in the last 18 months with Lothian’s Christine Black, another former BADMINTONscotland President, being awarded the BEM in the New Year’s Honours List in 2016 for her services to badminton.

Anne Smillie, BADMINTONscotland’s Chief Executive, paid tribute to Ian, saying: “The BEM is fitting reward for all the hard work and detailed planning that Ian has put into our sport and its events.”

It was a weekend of good news for badminton figures in Scotland.

Judy Murray, who is one of Scotland’s Official Ambassadors for the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017, received an OBE in the new Honours List for her services to tennis.

Another Ambassador, Finn Russell scored a try in Scotland’s splendid win over Australia on Saturday and was then called up to join the British Lions squad.
