Kieran Merrilees defeated India’s Anand Pawar as Scotland experienced mixed fortunes on day two of the Spanish International in Madrid.
Merrilees, the seventh seed, defeated Pawar for the first time after losing their previous two meetings.
Until today’s first-round clash Merrilees had not even taken a game off the two-time former Scottish Open champion but today Merrilees was always in charge as he won 21-15 21-13 to earn a second-round clash tonight against Kai Schaefer, the German he defeated at last year’s Yonex Belgian International in their only previous meeting.
But there was disappointment for Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh in the men’s doubles when they went down 21-13 21-10 against Japan’s Keiichiro Matsui and Yoshinori Takeuchi.
Team-mates Adam Hall and Alex Dunn join Merrilees in the evening’s second-round programme after an opening bye and they face Bulgarian qualifiers Peyo Boichinov and Ivan Panev.
Julie MacPherson and Eleanor O’Donnell were bidding to join them tonight as they faced Chloe Birch and Jess Pugh in their women’s doubles first-round clash.
But Birch and Pugh proved too strong for the Yonex Scottish National champions and the England pair went through 21-15 21-18.
