Merrilees starts off strong in the Netherlands

Kieran Merrilees got off to a strong start in the Dutch Open earlier today, defeating his Indian opponent, Karan Rajan Rajarajan in straight sets 21-11 21-14.

It was a more auspicious start than when Kieran played the same tournament last year. In the 2016 iteration of the Dutch Open, he similarly faced India's Lakhanee Sarang in his opening match of the main draw, unfortunately losing in two games.

There were no mistakes this time around, however, with Kieran taking the lead in the first game at 4, and refusing to allow his opponent more than 2 consecutive points on his way to an 11-8 lead at the break. After the break Kieran continued to dominate taking first 4, then 6 points, in a row on his way to a comfortable first game victory.

In the second game, Kieran quickly got himself out in front and never looked back. Although Rajarajan managed to save two game points, Kieran came out on top to take the match 21-11 21-14. He will face German Lars Schaenzler late tonight, around 9 pm local time, in the second round.
