Scotland demolish South Africa at World Junior Championships

Scotland’s juniors carried on their good form in Indonesia today with a 3-0 defeat of South Africa at the World Junior Championships for the Suhandinata Cup.

Ciar Pringle and Ciara Torrance got the Scots off to the best possible start with a 21-16 21-14 win over Jarred Elliot and Johanita Scholtz before Rachel Sugden doubled Scotland’s lead, beating Megan De Beer 21-17 21-16 in girls’ singles.

Christopher Grimley then clinched an unassailable 3-0 score line, winning his boys’ singles match against Robert Summers 21-6 21-11 in just seventeen minutes to allow Scotland to progress without having to contest the final two matches of boys’ and girls’ doubles.

The young Scots now go into a play-off competition to determine the ranking positions from 17-24.

Tomorrow they face a difficult match against a strong Canadian team who only just squeezed through their match with Germany today.

The Germans won the opening rubbers of boys’ and girls’ doubles before Canada hit back, winning both singles matches as well as mixed doubles for a 3-2 victory.
