Scotland’s bid for a title hat-trick ended in disappointment tonight on day one of the Junior Quadrangular 2017 in Dublin.
The defending champions had started well enough with a 9-0 whitewash against Wales and followed that up with a 6-3 win over the hosts Ireland.
But England, who also defeated Wales 9-0, outplayed Ireland 7-2 so the signs were ominous.
In the title showdown there were wins for Kenneth Cheung and Callum Smith and Jamie Gunn and Michael Maguire in the opening doubles contests.
But after that it was all England as they emerged 7-2 winners to take the title.
It would have been a close run thing if Maguire, Smith and Alice Campbell had been able to come out on top in their singles matches which were all hotly contested over three games. Maguire, in particular, came so close before losing 21-23 21-18 22-20 against Neil Bhabuta.
The Scotland squad will now try for title glory in tomorrow and Sunday’s individual events.
The Scotland squad, who all featured on day one, is: Kenneth Cheung, Calum Flockhart, Jamie Gunn, Michael McGuire, Callum Smith; Jodie Black, Alice Campbell, Jodie Harris, Eilidh McCallister and Erin Waddell.
