Scotland lose out to Canada at World Junior Championships

Scotland today lost out to Canada in the first round of the play-off competition to determine the ranking positions for the teams placed 17-24 in the World Junior Mixed Team Championships.

Matthew Grimley went down 21-17 21-17 to Brian Yang in boys’ singles and Rachel Sugden was beaten 21-9 21-9 by Talia Ng in girls’ singles.

Chrispher and Matthew Grimley gave the Scots hope, winning their boys’ doubles tie with Kyle To and Desmond Wang 21-8 21-15, but Catherine Choi and Crystal Lai secured an unassailable 3-1 lead with a 21-15 21-18 win over Lauren Middleton and Ciara Torrance.

Scotland face USA tomorrow, who also suffered a 3-1 defeat today to New Zealand, as they compete for ranking positions 20-24.

If Scotland beat USA they will face the winner of the match between Macau and Brazil to determine who will finish 21st in the world. A loss to USA would see the Scots face the loser of the Macau v Brazil tie to play off for positions 23 and 24.
