Young scots impress in U19 Irish Open

Last weekend, a number of young scots made the short hop across the Irish Sea to challenge across all five events in the FZ FORZA Irish U19 Open 2017.

There was a Grimley in each of the men’s singles semi-final matches, although both were involved in ultimately losing efforts, with Matthew going down 21-13 21-10 to Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen, and Christopher going down in a much tighter three game affair 21-15 16-21 21-16. There were also some all Scottish ties earlier in the men’s singles event with Christopher Grimley eliminating Brandon Tsang, Adam Pringle eliminating Joshua Apiliga and Matthew Grimley eliminating Adam Pringle.

After eliminating Joshua Apiliga and Adam Pringle, Matthew and Christopher Grimley contested the final of the men’s doubles event against Ireland’s pairing of Nhat Nguyen and Paul Reynolds. Despite a fighting performance they, unfortunately, went down 21-12 21-11 to the Irish pair who had eliminated another Scottish pairing, Ciar Pringle and Glen Lewington, at the semi-final stage.

Despite dominating in the mixed doubles draw, there wasn’t to be a Scottish winner, as German duo (and first seeds) Lukas Resch and Emma Moszczynski overcame Adam Pringle and Rachel Andrew 21-14 21-17 in the final.

Both Rachel Sugden and Basia Grodynska made it through to the quarter final stages of women’s singles, but neither could progress any further in the event.

In women’s doubles, Lauren Middleton and Sarah Sidebottom fought through to the semi-finals before bowing out to first seeds Moszczynski and Petrikowski from Germany.
