Silver for Newall in Lithuanian International

Mauchline’s Holly Newall scored one of the best results of her career over the weekend as she secured a women’s singles silver medal at the Lithuanian International.

What looked like a difficult opener was negotiated with relative ease as she beat fourth seed Getter Saar of Estonia 21-16 21-13 in the first round.

Newall followed that up with wins over Anastaysiya Cherniavskaya (Belarus) 21-15 21-13 and Amalie Schulz (Denmark) 21-16 21-16 to reach the semi-final before beating Swiss player Jenjira Stadelmann 22-20 21-19 to reach the final.

But her opponent in Sunday’s showpiece proved too strong.

French player Leonice Huet battled to a close 22-20 win in the opening set before wrapping up the title 21-10 in the second.

Newall also partnered Basia Grodynska to the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles.

They beat Polish duo Anna Duda and Szubert Karolina 21-18 21-18 before running up against Elizaveta Pyatina and Anastasiia Sharapova where a superb 17-21 21-16 21-17 win over the Russian pair sent Newall and Grodynska into the quarter-finals.

But their campaign ended with a 21-13 21-17 defeat to Liana Lencevica and Jekaterina Romanova of Latvia.
