Coaches are essential for teaching and developing players at every level of badminton – without coaches, the sport would simply not exist in the way it does today.
To give their players the best advantage, coaches must be aware of the latest techniques and philosophies involved in coaching the game. Below, you can see Badminton Scotland’s pathway for coach development.
Developing confident and proficient coaches is a key priority for Badminton Scotland. Our Coach Education courses have been devised to educate and empower coaches to be the best that they can be.
It doesn’t just end with our coaching qualifications. We also offer coaches the opportunity to continue their professional development through our suite of 3 hour workshops which will delve deeper into specific, technical skills required to be a well-rounded coach.
If you are working as a self-employed coach, here are some guidelines in line with sportscotland:
Badminton Scotland strongly advises coaches and tutors to go to the HMRC website for full details of self-employment status www.hmrc.gov.uk
Self-employed coaches and tutors may not be paid for travel to the session, but can claim this through tax relief.
Self-employed coaches and tutors have the right to hire someone else – suitably qualified – to carry out the work on their behalf or to hire additional help at their own expense.
Under the terms of self-employment, if the coach or tutor is unable or unwilling to carry out the work personally, they are obliged to send someone else to do it. The substitute coach or tutor must be suitably qualified.

All coaches working with children and protected adults are responsible for being knowledgeable and compliant with the current Protecting Vulnerable Groups Act. If coaches are undertaking regulated work with protected groups they should have the correct PVG check in place.
Coaches can be PVG checked as self-employed or in association with a club, institution or local authority. If coaches are working with a club on a regular basis it is recommended good practice to have a PVG made through the club rather than as a self-employed individual. If coaches are working regularly at several clubs a PVG update needs to be made with every club. This is so that if an individual became barred from working with a protected group every club and organisation they work with can be informed.
Badminton Scotland can act as an Intermediary Body between Badminton Clubs and Disclosure Scotland, if the club is affiliated and contracted with us. This means any coaches that work with a club can ask Badminton Scotland to process their PVG.
Badminton Scotland cannot process PVG checks for self-employed coaches, but can provide advice and guidance on this. If you are a self-employed coach working with children or vulnerable adults, you must ensure you have an up to date PVG check.

When employing a coach to work with children or protected adults it is YOUR responsibility to ask to see the coach’s PVG certificate. Please check the coach is a member of the PVG scheme for the relevant protected group: children and / or protected adults.
Badminton Scotland cannot ask to see coach’s PVG certificates as we are not their direct employer. This would, therefore, be a breach of their Data Protection Rights.
