National Club League Closing Date

This year’s Scottish Open was not just hugely successful for our performance players but also for our National Club League pilot, aiming to place club competition as a key part of what we do at Badminton Scotland.

Josh Neil, the organiser of the event, stated: “This was a pilot event to get clubs together to engage with us and see how we can develop club leagues going forward.”

The winning clubs got the chance to compete on the main courts on the Saturday of the event (Scottish Open). Jack MacGregor, one of the winners from Lanarkshire Badminton Academy said: “There was all types of players and it was just great to see everybody enjoying it and having a great time. It was really well run and great fun.”

Allan McMillan from Country Badminton Club said that it was an enjoyable chance for club players to come out and play infront of a crowd. Further he concluded “I think that Scotland has a really good record of brining good quality competition here and getting good players to come. When they are here they (Badminton Scotland, red.)  treat them really well, and they are treating us well today as club players which is fantastic. So, we get a buzz about it and want to come back.”

Based on the positive feedback the first National Club League will be taking place on Sunday 26th January 2020, 09:00 to 18:00 at sportscotland National Sports Training Centre Inverclyde in Largs!

This is an exciting opportunity for clubs of all levels to take part in a national club versus club competition, taking place on Sunday 26 January from 9am-6pm in the 9 court sportscotland National Sports Training Centre.

The winners of the A division will be invited to attend finals day of the Yonex Scottish National Championships in Perth on Sunday 2 February, as guests of Badminton Scotland, where they will be officially presented with the NCL trophy.

There will be up to 4 ability based divisions with 4 teams in each division. Clubs can enter a maximum of 1 team per division (4 teams). This will ensure every team plays in matches appropriate to their ability.

Each team will play against all others in their division, therefore being guaranteed 3 team matches consisting of 2 singles and 3 doubles matches.

Teams can have a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 players, with players being allowed to play in both singles and doubles if required. This competition is mixed gender and therefore male/female players can play in any of the events. Teams must however, have a minimum of 1 representative from each gender as we want to encourage female participation in this event, whilst ensuring clubs are still able to field a team.

This competition is available to any club affiliated to BadmintonScotland. Clubs must ensure players they select to play for their teams are members of their club through the online system and regularly attend their club.

Furthermore, BadmintonScotland is looking to continue to develop this National Club League competition and in order to do this, we encourage clubs to provide us with feedback at the event to ensure we create a high quality competition that meets both the competitive needs and social needs of our clubs. Discussion points to consider will include, future venue choice, gender proportions, minimum age, social evening and many more.

The cost of this event will be £80 per team, however there are only 16 spaces up for grabs, so snap up your place fast to ensure your club gets a place in this new, exciting experience
