Team selection

BADMINTONscotland selects teams at various age groups to represent Scotland in certain world and European events.

Scottish Senior Team


This Policy will apply to all BADMINTONscotland senior team selections except for those events that have their own specific selection criteria for example Commonwealth Games.

Teams will be selected according to the following priorities:

1. The strongest available players / pairs should be selected for each event.

2. Where a full team cannot be selected from category 1, players / pairs who are identified as having the potential to win matches or medals at the event in question will be considered.

3. Where a full team cannot be selected from categories 1 or 2, players / pairs who are identified as having the potential to win matches or medals in the foreseeable future (next 12- 24 months) will be considered.

 

Player Eligibility

All athletes wishing to be considered should note that it is mandatory to enter both the Scottish Open and Scottish National Championships.

Additionally they must participate regularly in Scottish and International ranking events and be eligible to play in accordance with BWF General Competition Regulations which can be downloaded here 

Scottish U19 Team


This Policy will apply to all BADMINTONscotland Junior Team selections.

Teams will be selected according to the following priorities:

1. The strongest available players / pairs should be selected for each event from those players who fulfil the eligibility criteria below.

2. Where a full team cannot be selected from category 1, players / pairs who are identified as having the potential to win matches or medals at the event in question will be considered.

3. Where a full team cannot be selected from categories 1 or 2, players / pairs who are identified as having the potential to win matches or medals in the foreseeable future (next 12- 24 months) will be considered.


Player Eligibility

All athletes wishing to be considered must participate regularly in Junior Scottish and International ranking events with the Scottish National Junior Championships being mandatory.

International Considerations
Selectors will consider results and performances from Junior International competitions. Final placings, head to head results and performances will support final selections.

Domestic Considerations
Selectors will consider results and performances from the Junior domestic competitions list below. Final placings, head to head results and performances will support final selections. Relative strength of overall competition may be considered. Any athlete wishing to be considered must compete in three of the four tournaments below. Entry to the Scottish National Junior Championships is mandatory.

U19 Scottish National Junior Championships 8-9 October 2016
U19 Yonex East of Scotland Junior Championships 12-13 November 2016
U19 Victor West of Scotland Junior Championships 4-5 March 2017
U19 Glasgow Junior Championships 2017 – dates to be confirmed
A member of the selection panel will be present to view from the semi-finals onwards at each event.

Exemption Criteria
Exemptions to domestic competitions will be considered in other exceptional cases e.g. injury or illness. This will be at the discretion of the Head Coach and must be agreed in advance with appropriate medical evidence provided if appropriate. 

Scottish U17 Team


This Policy will apply to all BADMINTONscotland Junior Team selections.

1. The strongest available players / pairs should be selected for each event, from those players who fulfil the eligibility criteria below.

2. Where a full team cannot be selected from category 1, players / pairs who are identified as having the potential to win matches or medals at the event in question will be considered.

3. Where a full team cannot be selected from categories 1 or 2, players / pairs who are identified as having the potential to win matches or medals in the foreseeable future (next 12- 24 months) will be considered.

Other Selection Criteria
Criteria for selection for other major events eg 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2020 Olympics, will be made available in due course.

Criteria for the 2018 Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast, Australia) will be in two sections: the Games specific criteria and badminton-specific criteria. 

Appeals


It is only possible to appeal non-selection for senior events ie not U19, U17, U15 events.

A Senior player has the right of appeal to BADMINTONscotland; and any such appeal must be received in writing within 3 days of the date of a letter indicating non-selection; or within 3 days of the date of a selection letter sent to another player. Such letter of appeal requires to include a cheque for £25 payable to “BADMINTONscotland”. Clause 3.8.3.5 of the Bye-Laws and Rules of the Scottish Badminton Union Ltd states the following:

“There will only be two grounds for appeal:

“(a) that the selection was not made according to due process or in accordance with the agreed criteria;

“(b) that there was unreasonable bias or conflict of interest in one or more of the selectors.

Any such appeal must be lodged within three days from the date notification is received by the appellant. The appellant will require to lodge a deposit of £25 with any such appeal. If the appeal is successful, the deposit will be refunded. Otherwise, the deposit will be fortfeit”

BADMINTONscotland’s Appeals Panel meet to consider any appeals at a pre-arranged time – this Appeals Panel consists of two BADMINTONscotland representatives, as well as BADMINTONscotland’s Honorary Legal Adviser and an independent representative nominated by sportscotland

The Panel’s decision on the Appeal is formally advised to the appellant as soon as possible following the Appeals Panel meeting. Only in the event of the Appeal being upheld will the £25 payment is reimbursed.
