Grimleys through to last-sixteen in Estonia
Christopher and Matthew Grimley ensured Scotland’s day ended on a high note on Thursday evening when they won their opening men’s doubles match at the European Junior Championships.
Having received a first round bye, the Scottish top seeds wasted no time in despatching their second round opponents, Finland’s Eero Lauri and Victor Lindhal, winning 21-13 21-14 to progress to the round of last-sixteen.
They now face Danes Rasmus Espersen and Sebastian Gronberg for a place in the quarter-finals while Lauren Middleton and Sarah Sidebottom, the only other Scots left standing in Tallinn, play Spanish eighth seeds Elena Andreu and Ana Carbon in the women’s doubles.
In Leuven at the Belgian International although Jack MacGregor and Ciar Pringle suffered a 21-18 23-21 reverse to Mads Emil Christensen and Kristoffer Knudsen and Julie MacPherson and Holly Newall lost out to Japan’s Mizuki Fujii and Nao Ono 20-22 21-10 21-15, Scotland are still represented in three events.
MacPherson and Adam Hall are going strong in the mixed doubles, and Hall is also in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles with Alex Dunn after the pair beat Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds of Ireland 21-7 21-14.
Eleanor O’Donnell and Ciara Torrance benefitted from a walkover against Julie Finne-Ipsen and Rikke Soby and will face Vimala Heriau and Margot Lambert of France.
