Three bronze medals for Scotland in U15 Quadrangular individual events

A young Scotland side travelled south over the weekend to compete in the annual Under 15 4 Nations Quadrangular, being held at the University of Warwick.

And they returned with three bronze medals between them, two of which were won by Noah Sarvesvaran.

He won the first of his medals in the boys’ doubles, partnering Anthony McGuire. They opened with a marathon 22-20 15-21 21-18 win over Robbie Frost (Ireland) and Michael Pang (England) before a more straightforward 21-10 21-19 win over Welsh pair Nye Bennett and Harper Leigh put them into the semi-finals and a guaranteed bronze medal.

But despite winning the opening set against Matthew Cheung and Dylan Noble, another Welsh pair, they eventually succumbed 21-23 21-12 21-15.

Matthew Waring also picked up a boys’ doubles bronze medal with Harry Wakefield. They beat Ireland’s Jack Bridgeman and James Fleming in the first round before squeezing to a 21-19 25-23 win over Waring’s compatriots Finlay Jack and Josh Taylor in the quarter-finals.

But they, too had to settle for bronze when they were beaten by England’s eventual champions Oliver Butler and Ethan Hosken.

In the mixed doubles Sarvesvaran partnered twelve-year-old Vibha Raman to an easy first round win over Bennett and Anest Lewis-Fells.

A good second round win over Bridgeman and Nessa Flynn, where the Scots came back from a set down to win 15-21 21-13 21-18 was followed by a walkover to reach the semi-finals, when Hosken and Leona Lee withdrew having knocked out Waring and Katrina Chan.

McGuire missed out on a second bronze medal when he and Brooke Stalker lost out to eventual champions Butler and Tashvi Parab in the quarter-finals.

Stalker also lost out to Parab in the singles quarter-finals, while Ishbel McCallister lost to Leona Lee at the same stage as Lee won the title without dropping a set.

In the boys’ singles Taylor, McGuire and Waring all made the quarter-finals.

In the team event, Scotland finished in second place behind England. They opened their campaign with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Ireland on Friday morning, with Raman winning the deciding rubber over Michelle Shochan in the second girls’ singles.

An 8-1 defeat to England in the afternoon session took the wind out of Scotland’s sails, but the team bounced back to record a 9-0 whitewash over Wales to secure second place overall.

Josh Taylor and Anthony McGuire jointly received the Edna Gibb award, which is presented to the player or players in the Scotland squad whom the coaches consider to have given the best performance during the event.
