Successful weekend for Lothian players at 4 Nations Disability Championships

Players from Lothian Disability Badminton Club enjoyed a successful weekend at the Scottish 4 Nations Disability Championships, held at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility from 15-17 February.

Several of Lothian’s players were multiple medal winners with three – Fiona Christie, Richard Lean and Michael McCraw – winning title trebles.

In the standing events, Lean won the SL4/SU5 men’s singles courtesy of a final win over David Purdie while Leslie beat Nial Jarvie in the final of the SL3 men’s singles.

Lean and Leslie then teamed up to win the men’s doubles, once again beating Purdie and Jarvie to the gold medal, before lining up against each other in the final of the mixed doubles where Lean completed his hat-trick, partnering Tracy Thomson to beat Leslie and Mary Wilson.

Wilson and Thomson had earlier won the women’s doubles together, while Wilson also won the women’s singles when she beat England’s Emma Stoner in the final.

In the wheelchair events Christie won the class 2 singles as well as the combined class 1 & 2 singles event, while Ireland’s Michael Smith won the class 1 singles.

Christie and Smith also teamed up to win the doubles.

Bobby Laing, won a brace of titles in the SS6 events, beating Andrew Davies in the final of the singles before teaming up with him to win the men’s doubles over Ross Foley and Jack Purvis-O’Gorman.

And Michael McCraw underlined his current dominance of the Learning Disability events, following up the hat-trick of titles he won at last month’s National Championships with another treble in Motherwell.

McCraw won the class 1 men’s singles when he beat Murrie Robertson in a thrilling final, before teaming up with Kevin Dobson to once again beat Robertson, and his partner James Pert, in the final of the class 1 men’s doubles.

McCraw and Diane Gillan won the class 1 mixed doubles over Dobson and Linzi Finnigan while Samantha Monk and Katie O’Neill won the class 1 women’s doubles and Hazel Johnson won the class 1 women’s singles.
