2019 Ashaway Midland Junior Badminton Tournament

A fantastic entry comprising 150 players over 4 age groups and from all over Scotland took part in this event over the weekend.

There was a high standard of play with many players winning 2 events. The closest to a treble was Jodie Black, who lost the U17 Singles to Lindsay Ireland, but then teamed up with her to win the Doubles and paired Lewis Hart, who also won Doubles with Isaac Weir, to the Mixed Title.

Unseeded Euan Campbell won the U17 Singles, beating top seed Lewis Hart in the Quarterfinal and Callum Stokes in the Final.

His elder brother, Alastair made it a family double by winning the U19 Singles. Josh Apiliga, top seed, withdrew after his Mixed Semi Final, giving Alastair a walk over into the final, where he beat Callum Smith in a very close match.

As a result of Josh’s withdrawal, Callum Smith & Calum Flockhart took the U19 Doubles title, having knocked out second seeds Michael McGuire & Danny Robson in the Semi Final and top seeds Alastair Campbell & Lauren Page won the Mixed.

After losing the first game, Rachel Sugden came through against Rachel Cameron in the U19 Singles, having won the Doubles with Alice Campbell in the Round Robin on Saturday.

In contrast to the other age groups, the titles were well distributed at U15 level, with Katrina Chan being the only double winner, taking the Singles and the Doubles with Ishbell McCallister. The Boy’s Singles was won by Matthew Waring, defeating Finlay Jack who had put out Anthony McGuire in a thrilling Semi Final match. Anthony came back to win the Doubles with Noah Sarvesvan and the Mixed went to Josh Taylor & Katie Stewart.

The U13 event saw many seeds fall by the wayside and the final between two unseeded players was a victory for Brian Tait over Lewis Smith.

Boy’s Doubles was very competitive, with very little to choose between the pairs. Lewis Smith & Ewan Stewart eventually came out on top over Callum Jack & Abhinav Vinjam.

Deepti Vijayakumar won the U13 Girl’s Singles comfortably against Pravari Singh and then teamed up with her to win the Doubles against Abigail Barrie and Lanna Campbell.

Ewan Stewart won his second title with Iona Muir in the Mixed, beating Alfie Martin & Lanna Campbell.

Many thanks to Ashaway for their generous sponsorship, to all players, parents, spectators and the officials who ran a very successful event.
