There are five Scots still in contention for Spanish gold this weekend as the Spanish International 2019 takes place in Madrid.
In the women’s singles Kirsty Gilmour is top seed and opened her campaign on Thursday by beating Germany’s Fabienne Deprez 24-22 21-11 before surviving a scare on Friday against Chananchida Jucharoen of Thailand.
Gilmour lost the first set but regained her composure to win 10-21 21-16 21-11 to set up a quarter-final on Friday evening against Dane Line Chrisophersen.
There are two Scottish pairs in the men’s doubles. Alex Dunn and Adam Hall enjoyed a first round bye, then knocked out Singaporeans Hee Yong Kai and Loh Kean Hean 16-17 21-17 21-18.
They now face a tough test against Danish top seeds David Daugaard and Frederik Sogaard.
Christopher and Matthew Grimley will also play a Danish pair on Friday evening – Mathias Bay-Smidt and Lasse Molhede – after reaching the quarter-finals with good wins over Danish and then Indian opposition.
In the mixed doubles Hall and Julie MacPherson won their second round tie against Bjarne Geiss and Emma Moszczynski 21-11 21-8 after a first round bye.
But in the quarter-finals they came up against Ireland’s fourth seeds Sam and Chloe Magee, who won 21-18 26-24 to end the hopes of the Scots.
