2020 Yonex East of Scotland Championships
The Yonex East of Scotland Championships were held for the third year at the Jack Kane centre. Unfortunately, entries were down on last year but as always, there were some excellent, highly competitive matches throughout the weekend.
There was a new name on the men’s singles trophy with Callum Smith going one step better than last year by winning his first East title, defeating Danny Robson 21-15, 21-18 in a well contested final. In the ladies’ singles, Basia Grodynska won her first senior singles title reversing the result of last year’s final by beating Rachel Cameron 21-17, 21-6 in the final.
In the men’s doubles event, we were delighted to welcome Alex Dunn, fresh from his victory at the Austrian Open, playing with his brother Robert. Alex and Robert progressed through to the final, surviving a very tight semi final against Alistair Gordon and Mark Leith who played exceptionally well. In the final, they played the winners of the Glasgow Open, Adam Pringle and Jack McGregor. After an entertaining match, the Dunn brothers came out on top, winning 21-18 21-18.
The ladies’ doubles title was won by Caitlin Pringle and Sarah Sidebottom players who defeated last year’s doubles champion Rachel Cameron and her new partner Alice Campbell, 21-16, 22-20.
In the mixed doubles final, last year’s winner Robert Dunn again reached the final, this time with Caitlin Pringle. Robert and Caitlin provided probably the biggest shock of the weekend by defeating the top seeds Alex Dunn and Sarah Sidebottom in two very close games, 21-19 21-19. This gave Robert and Caitlin their second titles of the afternoon.
The consolation events for players who lost their first match in the main event, again provided some very competitive matches. The winners of the consolation events were:
Men’s singles – Isaac Weir
Women’s singles – Keryn Swan
Men’s doubles –Keith Campbell and Sean Leith
Mixed doubles – Isaac Weir and Brooke Stalker

Prizes were presented by Badminton Scotland Past President, Ian Campbell. Tournament Referee Colin Campbell thanked the Court Officials of Badminton Scotland, the staff at Jack Kane Centre as well as the players for the high quality of play and their cooperation and sportsmanship throughout the weekend. He also expressed his thanks to Yonex for their ongoing and much appreciated support of the event. Lothian Group is also greatly indebted to Gannon Sports who once again provided the prizes for the consolation events.
