Team Selection Information

The Badminton Scotland Performance programme provides a framework to support and develop athletes who have the potential to play at a high level and represent Scotland at Senior competitions.  On an annual basis, we consider the most suitable competition and training programme to aid this development.  You may find it useful to read the selection criteria for each of the three Performance Squads (Senior, Senior Development and Regional), as this includes clear performance targets in competitions.

With the exception of events which have their own specific selection criteria (eg Commonwealth Games), the National Head Coach will take into account the views of other full-time Performance Coaches, and then, based on these views, his own opinion and consideration of results achieved from older age group events (both domestic and international), he will make the final decision on senior team selections, It is likely than an independent person will be present when final senior team selection decision are made.

All athletes wishing to be considered should note that, unless express permission is granted by the National Head Coach, it is mandatory to enter both the Scottish Open and Scottish National Championships.

Additionally they should participate regularly in Scottish and International ranking events and must be eligible to play in accordance with BWF General Competition Regulations which can be downloaded here.

Entry to the Scottish National U19 championships is mandatory, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Historically, an appointed Selection Panel for all U19 events was appointed annually to consider selections for all U19 Team tournaments falling within a 12-month period.  With immediate effect, following ratification by the Board of Badminton Scotland, Selection Panels will be appointed for each separate U19 Team event, with each of these events having standalone selection criteria which can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

Entry to the appropriate Scottish National age group championships is mandatory.

Historically, an appointed Selection Panel for all U17, U15, U13 events was appointed annually to consider selections for these age group Team tournaments falling within a 12-month period.  With immediate effect, following ratification by the Board of Badminton Scotland, Selection Panels will be appointed for each separate U17/U15/U13 Team event, with each of these events having standalone selection criteria which can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

The graded international is a new initiative which has been set up jointly by Badminton Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales.

It is not aimed at International standard players – instead it is a chance for more social-minded club-standard players to travel and compete against teams of a similar standard from the other home nations.

The inaugural event was held in Ireland in 2019, with the second event held in Wales in July 2022.

Scotland will host the third event on 19 & 20 August 2023, at the Sir Craig Reedie Centre in Glasgow.  Selection for Teams G and H will be based on results from Grade C Scottish ranking events in the 2022/23 season, with selection for Teams E and F based on results from Grade B Scottish ranking events in the 2022/23 season. More specific selection criteria can be found in the links at the top of this page.

Masters events are selected by the Masters Selection panel, chaired by Dan Travers. Selections will generally be based on results achieved in the most recent National Masters Championships, but the panel is afforded the flexibility to deviate from this where obvious anomalies occur.

Players have the right of appeal to Badminton Scotland; and any such appeal must be received in writing within 3 days of the date of a letter indicating non-selection; or within 3 days of the date of a selection letter sent to another player. Such letter of appeal requires to include a cheque for £25 payable to “Badminton Scotland”.  If the appeal is successful, the deposit will be refunded. Otherwise, the deposit will be forfeit.

The Panel’s decision on the Appeal is formally advised to the appellant as soon as possible following the Appeals Panel meeting. As intimated above, only in the event of the Appeal being upheld will the £25 payment is reimbursed.

For senior team selections, Clause 3.8.3.5 of the Bye-Laws and Rules of the Scottish Badminton Union Ltd states the following:

“There will only be two grounds for appeal:

(a) that the selection was not made according to due process or in accordance with the agreed criteria;

(b) that there was unreasonable bias or conflict of interest in one or more of the selectors”

For Junior team selections (U19, U17, U15 and U13), there is only one ground for appeal:

“That the selection was not made according to due process or in accordance with the agreed criteria;”
