2018 West of Scotland Championships
The 2018 West of Scotland Championships was held at the Sir Craig Reedie Badminton Centre at the weekend.
With the majority of the current Scottish senior and junior squad playing, as well as some of the previous senior Scottish squad, we were expecting some exiting games and we were not disappointed.
There were some excellent performances on Saturday and all of Sunday’s semi-finals and finals were well contested and great to watch.
The winner of the men’s singles was Ben Torrance who defeated Mark MacKay 19-21 21-9 21-17 in the final.
Ben was the top seed and reached the final beating the 3/4 seed Ciar Pringle 22-20 21-10.
Mark was unseeded and he defeated the second seed Adam Pringle in the quarter-finals 24-22 21-16 and Alistair Campbell in the semi-final 21-9 21-19.
In the woman’s singles top seed Rachel Sugden reached the final without dropping a set and went on to win the final against 3/4 seed Basia Grodysnka 21-15 21-9.
The men’s doubles final was contested by the top two seeds with Alex Dunn & Adam Hall winning 21-15 21-18 against Jack Macgregor & Ciar Pringle.
The women’s doubles victory went the way of the second seeds (there was no top seed as partnerships were changed in a few of the doubles pairings due to illness/injury).
The final was contested between Rebekka Findlay & Caitlin Pringle and Julie Macpherson & Holly Newall, with Julie and Holly winning 21-9 21-11.
The last final of the day saw Adam Hall and Julie Macpherson take their second victories of the tournament, beating Matthew Grimley and Ciara Torrance 21-14 21-13 in what was a great game to end a brilliant finals day.
The west of Scotland group would like to thank the Badminton Scotland Court Officials for umpiring and line judging all the semi-finals and finals, Jean McVean , Frances Heslop and Mark Caldwell for helping at the table. Alistair Hall, Patrick McHugh and Nina Waddell for running the cafe and finally the Cockburn centre for their support over the weekend.
Our next event is 1-2 December for the U13/17 championships.
