2023 Scottish National Junior Badminton Championships U13/17
Well done to everyone who took part in this weekend’s Scottish National Junior Championships. There were 77 entries over 10 events, hosted at the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing UHI Perth on 15 and 16 April.
Under 13s
Jaagruti Mannem had a fantastic tournament. She won the girl’s singles beating Elona Kennedy 21-8 21-8 and added another to her tally in the girl’s doubles, pairing up with Arisha Manir to beat Emily Jobson and Elona Kennedy over 3 sets (21-15 19-21 21-15).
In the mixed, Dylan Jia and Jaagruti Mannem took the title with a 21-17 21-4 win against Calum Tsang and Elona Kennedy.
In the boy’s singles, it was Calum Tsang who claimed the top spot with a 21-14 21-19 win against Dylan Jia.
Calum faced Dylan again in the boy’s doubles alongside partner Yingfan Wang. Dylan and partner Meldrick Dsouza came out winners with a score of 21-9 21-4.
Special mention for Dylan, Elona and Calum who reached the finals in all three disciplines!
Under 17s
Iona Muir had an outstanding weekend securing the Girl’s Singles title with a 21-12 21-10 victory over Orkney’s Shannon Leslie.
In the girl’s doubles, Iona and Deepti Vijayakumar beat Shannon Leslie and Gemma Foulis 21-18 21-14 before Iona rounded off a strong performance in winning the mixed title with Edinburgh’s Blair Tait. Iona and Blair secured the title with a scoreline of 21-14 21-13 against Sam Groundwater and Shannon Leslie.
Huge well done and shout out to Shannon Leslie who reached all three finals.
In the boy’s doubles final, Lewis Smith and Ewan Stewart fought over 3 sets to beat Blair Tait and Lingyun Xiao 22-20 11-21 21-17. Over to the Boy’s Singles, Lingyun went head to head against his double’s partner coming out on top with a 21-19 21-17 win.
