Apiliga and Sugden go Wild at the West
Joshua Apiliga and Rachel Sugden both won title trebles at the U15/19 West of Scotland Championships, held on 2 & 3 March at the Sir Craig Reedie Centre in Glasgow.
Top seed Apiliga had to battle hard for his U19 boys’ singles crown, coming from behind to beat Callum Smith 19-21 21-11 21-10 in the final having squeaked through his semi-final with Michael McGuire in similar fashion, winning 9-21 21-17 21-16.
And there was more Apiliga-shaped heartache to come for McGuire in the doubles events.
In the boys’ doubles Apiliga and Josh MacKay downed McGuire and Danny Robson 21-19 21-18 while in the mixed Apiliga and Sugden both sealed their hat-tricks courtesy of a 21-19 21-18 final win over McGuire and Alice Campbell.
Campbell and Sugden teamed up to win the girls’ doubles, beating Rachels Andrew and Cameron 21-13 21-18 in the final, while Sugden also defeated Cameron in the final of the girls’ singles, winning a close tussle 21-11 15-21 21-18.
In the U15 events Brooke Stalker won a brace of titles. She partnered Michael’s younger brother Anthony to the mixed doubles title and teamed up with Katrina Chan to win the girls’ doubles.
Chan lost out in the final of the girls’ singles to Vibha Raman while unseeded Josh Taylor caused an upset to win the boys’ singles and Vincent Cheung and Akshat Gupta took the honours in the boys’ doubles.
The Colin Atkinson Memorial Award was presented to Erin Sinclair by last year’s recipient Scott Waddell.
