Campbell and Sugden win Hungarian International Junior

Alice Campbell and Rachel Sugden won the girls’ doubles at the Hungarian Junior International over the weekend.

They had a first round bye before beating Slovakian duo Natalia Tomcova and Lucia Vojtekova 21-17 21-12.

That sent them into a quarter-final clash against second seeds Nina Becker and Hannah Jaenichen of Germany, which they won in convincing fashion 21-7 21-17.

Another convincing win against Hungarian third seeds Laura Farkas and Vivien Sandorhazi, this time with a score-line of 21-11 21-10, put the unseeded Scots into the final.

Playing Russia’s Vilena Asfandiiarova and Mariia Golubeva, who had beaten the top seeds in the second round, Campbell and Sugden lost their first set of the tournament.

But they bounced back strongly to win 14-21 21-19 21-16 to claim the top step of the podium and the gold medal.

A good run of results also saw Sugden reach the quarter-finals of the singles and the mixed doubles, where she partnered Jamie Gunn.
