Catching up with previous athlete: Martin Campbell

After spending 10 years as a full time badminton player, Martin Campbell has made the move into the world of financial services by setting up his own financial management practice with St. James’s Place Wealth Management. Whilst competing on the European Badminton Circuit, Martin spent three years at Loughborough University studying Mathematics with Management where he achieved a first class honours degree alongside being a regular member of the Scotland Team. This sparked his passion and interest in joining the financial world.

Following the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, he made the decision to move on from life as a professional badminton player. After some time spent reflecting on the next phase of his career, during which he also enjoyed coaching some of Scotland’s brightest stars for the future, he identified the opportunity to align himself with St. James’s Place Wealth Management and following a five-stage interview process, he earned himself a place on the prestigious St. James’s Place Academy.

Since then, he has undertaken multiple assessments and exams in order to gain his professional qualifications and he has now successfully set up his own financial management practice. Martin has already built up a diverse client base, comprising individuals from a number of areas including business owners and sports professionals as well as people across a wide demographic age range and different stages of their careers.

Martin plans to stay involved with the sport he has grown up with and loves. Martin said “Although my new role may seem very different to life as a professional athlete, there is actually a lot of characteristics  that enabled me to succeed in my sporting career, such as work ethic, discipline and attention to detail, that I can take forward into my new career. I believe that these same characteristics will provide strong foundations in enabling me to help clients plan for their financial future.”

“I was always interested in the financial industry and saw myself moving into this sector following badminton. I wanted to have a client facing role, but more importantly one where I could make a direct impact and make a positive difference to people. This role allows me to do this by helping people make better financial planning decisions so that they have stronger financial foundations in place for their own and their family’s future. In many ways it’s similar to coaching, I work with people at the beginning of a process, help them identify where their weaknesses are, look at their goals and aspirations, and put plans in place to help them achieve these.”

“Coming from my experience playing full time badminton for the last 10 years, I know first hand that there isn’t much support available for athletes in terms of managing their money and in having the right strategies and plans in place throughout their sporting careers so that they have a more solid financial basis from which to transition to the next stages of their lives. This is something I am passionate about addressing and making a positive difference to people to the best of my ability.”
