Clubs continue to engage with Shuttlemark

Three more clubs have joined the Shuttlemark initiative, Badminton Scotland’s National Club Accreditation Scheme.

Aimed at developing and strengthening infrastructure in order to increase membership and participation, a total of 18 clubs have now attained one of the Shuttlemark awards with Allander (East Dunbartonshire), Moravian (Moray) and Orion (Fife) the latest clubs to achieve the bronze award.

There are three levels to the programme – Bronze, Silver and Gold – with clubs required to achieve all three levels before being awarded the Shuttlemark.

In addition to the three new clubs, Orkney Badminton Association have made swift progress since attaining their bronze award earlier this year by achieving the silver standard last month while Caithness Badminton Association, who attained their bronze Shuttlemark at the end of 2018 have also now upgraded to silver.

Launched in November 2017, the aim of the programme is to help support clubs in order to develop and strengthen their infrastructure, plan for the future and in turn increase capacity and grow.

As well as a suite of tools, templates and good practice case studies, clubs can also access support from Regional Development Officers (RDOs) to achieve each level. Once a club has achieved a certain level, they can access certain benefits and rewards.

Increasing participation and developing coaches, volunteers and workforce, whilst also having solid plans for the future, are key elements for a successful club and Rebecca Reid, President of Orkney Badminton Association, said:

“We are working hard to up-skill our coaches and provide consistently challenging training nights to raise the performance of the players.

“We will be hosting the Island Games in 2023 and we aim to be well prepared to ensure all planning, organisation for the badminton competition is on course. That includes the training of our own home based players.

“We are delighted to have achieved silver accreditation as we have worked hard to ensure our committee, players, coaches and volunteers are fully engaged.”
